Acupuncture + Herbs = A Powerful Partnership

Traditional Chinese Medicine herbal formulas work from the inside out — offering targeted nourishment, clearing, or tonifying effects based on your unique pattern of imbalance. Tonifying herbs are used to build up what’s lacking in the body, contributing to the symptoms.

  • Qi herbs (like ginseng) boost energy and vitality.
  • Blood herbs (like dang gui) nourish the blood to help with fatigue, dizziness, or irregular menstruation.
  • Yin herbs: replenish cooling, moistening fluids — helpful for night sweats or dryness.
  • Yang herbs: warm and stimulate function — helpful for cold extremities, low libido, or sluggish metabolism.

If acupuncture is adjusting the body’s “wiring,” then, think of herbs as supporting the body’s internal “chemistry.” Together, they strengthen your system from multiple angles.

Why Are They So Effective Together?

1. Deepened and Prolonged Results
Acupuncture treatments initiate change, but herbs can help sustain and deepen the effects between visits. For example, an acupuncture treatment can calm anxiety or relieve a headache. An herb formula can help regulate the system daily — reducing symptom recurrence and reinforcing the progress made in treatment.

2. Treating Both Root and Branch
In TCM, conditions are broken down as such: the root cause of the condition and its branch symptoms. Acupuncture focuses on alleviating immediate symptoms (like pain or insomnia), while herbs can also address the deeper, underlying imbalance (such as a deficiency or stagnation contributing to the issue). This dual approach can create even more lasting relief.

3. Customization and Flexibility
Just like acupuncture, herbal formulas are highly personalized. Practitioners often tailor classical formulas to your specific presentation (referring to the unique constellation of signs, symptoms, tongue and pulse findings, and overall energetic patterns that an individual exhibits at a given time), adjusting ingredients as these conditions in your body change. This makes herbs a dynamic and responsive tool that adapts to your healing process.

Rather than treating a Western medical diagnosis (like “migraine” or “IBS”) directly, Chinese medicine treats the underlying pattern driving that condition — such as Liver Qi stagnation, Spleen Qi deficiency, or Damp Heat. Two people with the same Western diagnosis might have completely different presentations in Chinese medicine and therefore receive different herbal formulas.

4. Holistic Internal Support
Some conditions, especially internal or chronic issues — like hormonal imbalance, digestive problems, or fatigue — benefit immensely from daily herbal support. Herbs can strengthen digestion, regulate menstruation, boost immunity, calm the nervous system, and much more. All of which enhances the work done in the treatment room.

Fun fact: The herbs you are likely to find in your TCM formula are:

  • Turmeric
  • Ginger
  • Kelp
  • Nutmeg
  • Red yeast rice
  • Funnel
  • Goji berries
  • Licorice root
  • Gotu Kola
  • Astragalus
  • Ginseng
  • Fennel
  • Jujube dates
  • Dandelion

Chances are you’ve probably used some of these ingredients in your kitchen to make food or tea. Nevertheless, these herbs are grown, granularized, and packed in TCM to improve body function.

If you’re receiving acupuncture and haven’t yet tried herbs, it might be worth considering. When thoughtfully combined, herbs and acupuncture create a holistic care plan that supports your body physically, emotionally, and energetically — both from the inside and outside.
