Postpartum is an incredibly tender time. Doctors often consider the postpartum period to be just six weeks after birth, but if you’ve gone through it, you know that postpartum lasts for months or even years. During pregnancy, you’ve likely been seen by your care team regularly. This changes drastically once your baby arrives, when the focus is shifted to your little one. The transition into motherhood is just as important as the pregnancy itself, and its very important to receive thorough care during this time.
You may have heard of postpartum being referred to as the fourth trimester, which is first three months after birth. During this time, your baby is adjusting to life outside the womb as you recuperate from pregnancy and labor, as well as step into the profound new role of parent. Self care becomes family care; when mom is well she is better able to care for her baby.
East Asian medicine understands the postpartum time as one requiring great care and attention. Historically, Chinese culture promoted the practice of Zuo Yue Zi, or “sitting the month.” This practice promoted a full month of rest for the new mother. Other family members were expected to cook and clean so that the new mother could focus on feeding her baby and restoring herself. A reverential atmosphere is cultivated around the mother; she is fed warming stews and broths, treated with acupuncture and herbal medicine, as well as shielded from outside stressors. Our culture is a far cry from this kind of postpartum care, but coming into the clinic for treatment is an accessible way to offer yourself an opportunity for restoration.
After the profound events of labor and birth, the body has used up significant reserves of Qi and Blood. This state of relative deficiency leaves new mamas vulnerable. It’s imperative to renew the body after birth. Acupuncture and herbal medicine are powerful ways to restore your whole system. Treatment at this time is focused primarily on tonification and warming.
